Shreyas Iyer Likely to Take Over India T20I Captaincy

India’s selectors are gearing up for a major overhaul of the T20I setup before the tour of Ireland and England, including Shreyas Iyer replacing Suryakumar Yadav as captain. It is in line with India’s objectives for the long term planning for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Los Angeles New Zealand-Australia 2028 ICC T20 World Cup.

A T20I squad for the Ireland and England series will be named Saturday. This will be Indian team’s first assignment in T20I format since their triumph at the T20 World Cup earlier this year which India won under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.

While Suryakumar led India to the crown, he has come under fire for his poor run of form since. In the 2026 T20 World Cup, the 35-year-old made 242 runs in nine innings at an SR of 136.72. His IPL 2026 season was also below par, with a mere aggregate of 270 runs from the first thirteen matches at an average of just 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54. Consequently, he might miss the upcoming squad altogether.

Marizwan and Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to assume the captaincy role post Babar, have also not played for India in T20Is since December 2023. However, his lack of appearances in the ODI team was mainly due to a combination with players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma filling up middle-order slots.

Even as an injury replacement in India’s home T20I series against New Zealand in Jan 2026, Shreyas remained unused with the management opting to give chances to players on course for a T20 World Cup.

The Mumbai batter has bolstered his argument through great IPL outings and his refraining leadership. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and before that took Delhi Capitals (in 2020) and Punjab Kings (2025) he guided a team, respectively, to the IPL finals. He notched up 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and followed it up with another impressive display the following season, scoring 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026.

It would be the second successive year that India’s selectors will have replaced captains so soon after a major ICC win. In March 2025, Rohit Sharma won the Champions Trophy title with India, but was replaced as ODI captain prior to India’s tour of Australia later in the year, though he featured in the ODI team.

Also hotly debated in the selection meeting is likely to be the inclusion of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi He is likely to be given his maiden call-up to the senior national team after a sensational IPL season where he scored 776 runs at astounding strike rate of 237.30.

Should he be picked, it means Sooryavanshi will become the youngest player to be named in an Indian men’s squad since Sachin Tendulkar broke into the international scene back in the late-1980s. He will also play for India A in a tri-series with Afghanistan from June 9 to June 21 in Sri Lanka before joining the senior T20I setup.

India’s tour will then kick off with two T20Is vs Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and June 28. The team will leave for England to play a series of five T20Is, scheduled to take place from July 1 – July 11.
